Facebook recently revealed that of its 1.5 billion monthly users, nearly half only use mobile devices to access the service and over half of their users utilize mobile devices in combination with other platforms.
What does this signify for Facebook as a whole? Probably not much, but as we’ve covered before, people are moving from the traditional desktop experience to more dedicated mobile devices. But the big sticking point here is that 44 percent of Facebook’s active users never actually touch the desktop interface, meaning that this mobile-only trend might be accelerating faster than expected.
According to a report by the Pew Research Center, nearly two-thirds of Americans are now smartphone owners and more and more people are beginning to consider their smartphone their primary portal to the digital world.
10% of those surveyed said that they don’t have any other form of high-speed internet access other than their cell phone’s data plan and another 15% said they have limited options when it comes to getting online. To us, this demonstrates two things:
1.) Cell phone carriers are expanding their coverage at a faster rate than traditional broadband internet providers, further demonstrating the critical need for expanded municipal or pro-rated broadband access to rural and low-income areas.
2.) Americans’ shopping, browsing, and communication methods are shifting to mobile not only out of need or convenience, but to reduce the monthly data bill and avoid paying both a cell phone carrier and an ISP each month.
What does this mean for small business owners? Simply put, if your website and e-commerce platforms rely on desktop experiences, your company’s digital presence is quickly becoming obsolete. Even if your website is largely informational in nature, if your customers can’t quickly learn about your company on the platform they’re using to access your site, they’ll move on without a second thought.
